CONTINENTAL DRIFT: KENYA
After a lifetime of living in refugee camps, five South Sudanese runners competed under a single banner, the moniker “Team Refugee” during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Newsha Tavakolian traveled to the remote Kenyan refugee camp, Kakuma where the athletes trained. Exiled from their homes for more than a decade, these athletes represent a generation of stateless people. “Refugee” is the banner they’ve unwittingly carried for most of their lives.
